Three Thousand Converts in One Day

When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.” Acts 2:37-39

Three thousand people in one day! That’s what happened at Pentecost in the book of Acts, chapter 2. It’s the kind of moment every Christian who shares the Word dreams about. The sight of hearts changed, lives turned around, and faith brought to life.

Notice how it happened. The people were “cut to the heart.” God’s Word, preached by Peter, exposed their sin, very specifically, their role in rejecting and crucifying the Son of God. It was deep conviction. Peter didn’t leave them there. He pointed them to hope: Repent and be baptized…for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38). Sin and grace. That’s how God works.

We might wonder why we don’t see “Pentecost numbers” when we speak the Word or gather for worship. Are we doing something wrong? Scripture reminds us that conversion is not something we control. The Holy Spirit works faith when and where he pleases. The process is often hidden, taking place in hearts we cannot see.

There is no trick or formula. Just the powerful Word and the gift of baptism. Every single time someone moves from unbelief to faith, from guilt to forgiveness, from hopelessness to hope in Christ, heaven rejoices.

Keep speaking the Word. Keep trusting the promise. The same Spirit who worked through Peter is still at work today cutting hearts, healing souls, and bringing people to life in Christ.
