May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. (2 Corinthians 13:14)
We might be tempted to think that understanding God should be simple. Then we open the Bible and God is far beyond an easy human explanation. God is one. “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one” (Deuteronomy 6:4). And then God reveals himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. One God. Three persons. We call this the Trinity.
“How can that be?” is the natural question. Someone once said, “If you deny the Trinity, you will lose your soul; if you try to explain it, you will . . . . lose your mind.” God is at the center of our faith, and still God is greater than our understanding.
We often understand things by comparing them to something else. “It is like…” But God is not like anything else. He has no equal and no perfect comparison. Isn’t there some comfort in knowing God is not just like us or anything else, but is more powerful and gracious than we can put neatly into our human experience?
The Trinity is not a puzzle meant to frustrate us. It is a gift God reveals to bless us. The Son out of grace came down in human flesh to live, die, and rise for us. The Father loved the world and sent his Son. The Holy Spirit brings us into fellowship with God and with one another in faith.
Grace. Love. Fellowship. We may not fully understand the Trinity now. But we know enough to rejoice and be at peace. The three-in-one God is the true God who is here to bless you.
